Acai Berry Research

Acai berry products are created from the Brazilian fruit, the acai berry. Today, it is very popular due to the antioxidants that are found in the very tasty pulp of this small blueberry size berry. The acai berry products encompass a large variety of drinks including juices and various others along with pills for those that would rather just take a pill to enjoy the benefits. Researchers are more excited by the benefits that have been discovered than the overall taste of the acai berry drink.

The antioxidants that are found in the acai berry resulted in the destroying cultured human cancer cells during a study at the University of Florida. This university was the first to begin studying the benefits of this unique berry on the human body. Even though, the tests were not conducted on actual humans, but were tested on human cells in a Petri dish.

Information regarding the study was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry and explained the extracts from the berry found in acai berry drinks actually start a self-destruction response in 86% of leukemia cells in the lab tests.

One of the assistant professors at the university even went so far as to state the acai berry is now being considered to have more antioxidants than any other fruit and has the richest sources of these essential antioxidants. The study proved the utilizing such things as the acai berry drink, supplements and other acai berry products were very beneficial to the overall health of humans.

Of course, the study did not state that the acai berry drink or other acai berry products would actually prevent or cure cancer. Since the tests was not performed on humans, the end results have more to do with how the acai berry and its antioxidants properties will actually work with the human body. The study does show a ray of hope in the prevention and curing of cancer if it is only a small step in the right direction. Other fruits also carry these antioxidant properties such as grapes, guavas, and mangoes; however, the content is not as high as with the acai berry.

Of course, more studies and research will need to be done in order to learn exactly how the human body will absorb the nutrients, how our metabolism will work with the antioxidants, along with other biochemical processes. The antioxidants may not work in the same manner once introduced to the human body as it did in the Petri dish.

The acai berry drink and other products have only been on the market for a short five years. The results as to how these products will react with our body will take years to learn. Research will not stop with just how acai berry fights against cancer but due to the high concentration of antioxidants, may studies will be performed to learn if these drinks will be able to help individuals with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and other ailments.

As far as the study and research goes as of today, the acai berry may soon be classified as a super food and more studies will be conducted until they can fully understand all the wonderful properties that are hidden in this small berry.
