Why Green Tea and Losing Weight Go Hand in Hand

Green tea has been used for thousands of years by both the Chinese and Japanese as a beverage and as an herbal medicine. This use as an herbal medicine finally started gaining notice recently from the medical profession of the western world. Over the years, many studies have been conducted on the antioxidant and chemotherapeutic effects of green tea. And now, research conducted in both Switzerland and United States indicates that there may be a strong connection between green tea and losing weight.

Published in the December 1999 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and Urology, the study indicated that certain compounds that are abundant in green tea extracts might promote weight loss. Dr. Abdul Dulloo led the research at the University of Geneva on a group of 10 healthy young men. They ranged in size from lean to mildly overweight, and were put on a typical American diet. In addition they were asked to take a capsule with green tea and caffeine, a caffeine capsule, or a placebo with each meal. Results indicated that those gentlemen that took the green tea capsules were able to burn more calories on average. This indicates that the connection between green tea and losing weight might not be a myth after all.

Green Tea and the Fight Against Fat

Another way that green tea and losing weight may be connected is through the idea that green tea can be an active combatant against fat. Just about everyone realizes that in order to truly lose weight and get healthy, the fat content of a body must be reduced. A recent study showed that certain people who drank a bottle of tea fortified with green tea extract every day for three months lost more body fat than those who drank a regular bottle of oolong tea. While the exact connection is not yet known, there seems to be a link between green tea and losing weight, at least in the case of losing fat.

Another Possible Connection Between Green Tea and Losing Weight

All these studies mentioned above don't really touch on another reason why green tea and losing weight might be connected. The simple fact is green tea has the ability to satisfy a person like no other tea can. By drinking a glass or two with a meal, there is a good possibility that one will want to eat less, and thus lose weight. In addition, green tea doesn't necessarily have all the sugars and additives that can rob your body of hydration; causing fat and water weight to be kept on the body instead of being shed as calories are burned.
