What is a Green Tea Antioxidant and Why is it Beneficial?

There are many beneficial nutrients and compounds that can be found in green tea, one example which is a green tea antioxidant. Basically, there are four primary polyphenols which are found in green tea, and the green tea antioxidant arises from these; these powerful antioxidants have been shown in recent studies as being able to fight viruses, slow aging, as well as have an overall beneficial effect on a person's health in general.

In fact, certain clinical tests have shown that catechins (the four primary polyphenols) are able to destroy free radicals, have far reaching effects on the body; these free radicals, if left, could cause damage to the body at a cellular level, thus leaving the body susceptible to cancer, heart disease, and many other degenerative diseases.

About the Green Tea Antioxidant

A particular green tea antioxidant has also been shown to be able to protect the brain and fight against diseases such as Alzheimers. This is shown to be true because a recent study shows that high doses of the green tea ingredient known as EGCG appears to be able to significantly reduce the formations of beta-amyloid proteins in the brains of mice that were altered to develop Alzheimers disease.

EGCG is one of a group of antioxidants called flavonoids that are found in plants, and they have been linked to a wide variety of health benefits, such as protecting against cancer and that of heart disease as well. One important green tea antioxidant is that of EGCG, and this proves as being one of the most primary explanations for why green tea is considered to be so beneficial to our health overall.

It should be known that it is claimed that many polyphenols in green tea possess much more potent antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E, and the EGCG that is found in green tea is at least 100 times more effective than vitamin C and at least 25 times better than vitamin E at protecting cells and their genetic material, that of DNA, from damage that is believed to be linked to such aspects as cancer, heart disease, and other potentially life threatening illnesses.

Overall, it is important to both acknowledge and understand the antioxidants that are found in green tea, as well as the positive aspects and components that these antioxidants offer for your health and well-being.
